Duel by Shawn Harris
Couldn't load pickup availability
Two queens. Two castles. Two knights. One hill. And, inevitably, a duel. When two rival queens each send a knight to fight for control of the hill, the battle seems straightforward enough – until the winning knight stands up and nobody can work out which side they came from.
Told entirely through perfectly mirrored illustrations created using the school art technique of squish-painting, Duel is a wonderfully inventive picture book about knights, castles, conflict and what happens when two sides aren't quite as different as they thought.
Why we love it
There's something wonderfully satisfying about the symmetry in this book. Young readers can spot matching shapes, colours and characters while following the story, making it a clever introduction to symmetry that never feels like a lesson. And the ending is a lovely little reminder that perhaps sharing the hill isn't such a bad idea after all.
