The Skull - Jon Klassen

When Otilla finds herself lost in a dark forest, she discovers an abandoned house with a rather unusual resident: a skull. But this isn’t your average skull. He has a secret, and when night falls, the pair find themselves facing something rather mysterious.
The Skull by Jon Klassen is an eerie but gentle gothic folktale, filled with dry humour, beautiful illustrations and just enough creepiness to keep things interesting. A brilliant choice for children who enjoy spooky stories but aren’t quite ready for anything genuinely terrifying.
Why we love it
This is Halloween storytelling at its best: atmospheric, strange and slightly unsettling, but ultimately warm-hearted. We love the unlikely friendship at its centre and Klassen’s wonderfully understated sense of humour. It’s the sort of story that feels a little spooky while you’re reading it, then leaves you feeling rather cosy afterwards.
